2017 APT Conference

Welcome to the 15th Annual Meeting of the
Association for Political Theory
October 12-14, 2017

Host Institution

The Department of Political Science at the University of Michigan is delighted to host the Fifteenth Annual Conference of the Association for Political Theory. The hosts for the conference are Lisa Disch and Arlene Saxonhouse from the Department of Political Science. The conference is made possible by generous support from the Department of Political Science, The Department of Philosophy, the Department of Classics, the Department of Comparative Literature, Contexts for Classics, the Institute for Research on Women and Gender, the Humanities Institute, the College of Literature, Science and the Arts, Rackham Graduate School, and the UM Office of Research.

The Conference will be held at the Michigan League.  A map of the Michigan League's conference rooms can be found here.

Please consider attending our Thursday (Day 1) events.  Directions for attending the First Book Manuscript Workshop in Haven Hall (a short distance away from the main conference site, the Michigan League) can be found here.  The Dustin Howes Memorial Panel will be held at 5:15 PM in the Michigan League, Vandenberg Room.

Registration

Conference participants must be members of the Association. Membership is free. If you are not yet a member, please submit a membership application before registering. If you are a member already, please login before continuing to the registration page. You can register by going here.

Important Deadlines

  • Deadline to withdraw from program: July 31st (Any confirmed participant who withdraws after this date will not be able to propose a paper as author or co-author for the 2017 Conference.  This policy was approved by the governance committee to address an increase in late withdrawals in the recent past.  Each year APT must turn down 200 proposals, and late withdrawals leave open spots on the program that could have been filled by one of our colleagues.)
  • Deadline to register and pay for all participants appearing on the program: August 25th (After this date, we will offer any unconfirmed spots on the program to alternates.)
  • Deadline to register and pay for all other conference attendees: September 8th (After this date, the registration fee will automatically increase by $50. This deadline is necessary for planning the conference, especially the meals.)

Travel and Lodging

A couple of tips from our hosts:

·      Please be sure to book a hotel room early to take advantage of the specially reserved conference blocs. Hotel space in Ann Arbor is limited and expensive.

·      If you think you may want to dine in a restaurant on Thursday or Saturday evening, consider making a reservation in advance. Click here for a list of restaurant recommendations.

Paper Archive

Pre‐circulation requirement: All papers accepted for the conference must be submitted electronically to the archive on the APT website. Presenters on regular panels must do so no later than October 1st, 2017, and presenters on Workshop panels must do so by September 24th, 2017. Papers should be no more than 30 double‐spaced pages in length so that discussants may provide suitable feedback. The archive will be password‐protected so that access is limited to members of APT. We will remove from the program all participants who fail to submit their papers to the archive by these deadlines. These deadlines are to allow discussants and other conference participants sufficient time to read and prepare comments on papers. While we have been flexible with this deadline in the past, we will be enforcing it this year barring unforeseen circumstances out of the control of the presenter.

Directions to Access the 2017 APT Conference Paper Archive.

To upload your paper to the archive, please go to https://www.apt-us.org/ and login to your account. You should then go to: https://www.apt-us.org/filedepot# and look for the 2017 Ann Arbor folder in the list of folders on the left, at the bottom.
 
• Then, on the right, you can scroll down to find the session you are in, and in turn the file for your particular panel.  If you do not know your session or panel, please check the program.
• Click on the link to your panel's folder. You then click on the New File button in the upper left of the Filedepot window (it's just under the Filedepot text).
• This should bring up a pop-up window that will allow you to choose the file to upload. You can also give the file a Display Name, enter Tags for searches that people may do of the archive, and provide a Description and Version Notes. All of these are optional.
• Once you have filled everything out, just hit Upload File and your paper should appear in the panel folder.  Often FileDepot gives an error message (“Please Wait”) and does not refresh a screen – if this happens, simply hit your back button, refresh your screen, and you’ll likely see that your paper has been uploaded properly.
