Critical Review

Critical Review is a political theory journal specializing in political epistemology (e.g., epistemic democracy). In the past year we have published contributions from Andrew Gamble (Cambridge), Jennifer Hochschild (Harvard), Helene Landemore (Yale), Andrew Lister (Queen's, Canada), Sanford Levinson (Texas), Russell Muirhead (Dartmouth), and Alan Ryan (Oxford). In the coming year we will be publishing Richard Arneson (UCSD), Colin Bird (Virginia), Joe Carens (Toronto), Don Herzog (Michigan), James Johnson (Rochester), Jack Knight (Duke), Steve Macedo (Princeton), James Bernard Murphy (Dartmouth), Alan Patten (Princeton), Rob Reich (Stanford), Anna Stilz (Princeton), and John Tomasi (Brown). In addition to established political theorists we publish many younger scholars (Sam Arnold, Alex Gourevitch, Paul Gunn, Jamie Kelly, Mark Pennington, Andrew Lamey, Ilya Somin). Papers by graduate students are welcome, and peer review is available.

Our statement of purpose: Critical Review attempts to bring political theory into contact with empirical reality. We are particularly interested in epistemic realities. Thus, we encourage the submission of papers and review essays on epistemological problems in politics: Where do political actors’ assumptions, perceptions, beliefs, theories, and ideologies originate? How reliable are these sources? And what are the normative implications if these sources are unreliable?
