CFP: APT First Book Manuscript Workshop

First Book Manuscript Workshop
Deadline: June 2, 2017

The APT Governance Committee solicits applicants for the Association’s annual First Book Manuscript Workshop. The workshop will take place on the afternoon of Thursday, Oct. 12, at the 2017 APT conference in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The aim of the workshop is to provide critical feedback on a penultimate draft of a book manuscript that is not already under contract. The First Book Manuscript Workshop Committee will invite 2-4 senior scholars to comment on the work. The workshop will be open to all APT conference attendees; however, only those who have registered for the workshop will receive the draft of the manuscript in advance.

The Committee expects that any submitted manuscript based on a dissertation will have been thoroughly revised. Please note that the commentators for the workshop would need to receive the entire manuscript no later than August 20th. Applicants should have received their PhD no later than 2015, with a preference for those who received their PhD after 2011. We welcome applicants from all institutions (and from independent scholars), and are especially interested in manuscripts from scholars at institutions outside of the “R1” or “very high research” category, and at colleges and universities more generally that may lack resources to support intensive peer feedback.

Applications are due by June 2, 2017. This year's review committee, chaired by Jill Frank, and including Sonali Chakravarti and Alexander Moon, will identify a short list and make the final selection. Applicants will be notified no later than June 30.

If you wish to apply, please submit the following via e-mail to Jill Frank ( with First Book Manuscript Workshop in the subject line.
 – a CV
– a manuscript abstract (no more than one page)
– an introductory chapter
– a paragraph describing the current state of the manuscript
– a paragraph providing any other pertinent professional information (e.g., a tenure timeline)
